First
Amendment Institute to Study Freedom of the Press in San Antonio
The
First Amendment Institute, an annual program of the Freedom
of Information Foundation of Texas, is holding its second
2004 class session May 14-15 in San Antonio.
The
class will focus on freedom of the press and will examine
issues such as, “who or what is the press and does the Constitution
require it to be either responsible or fair?” Discussion
will center on current challenges to press freedom and participants
will debate the meaning of the fundamental Constitutional
right of a free press.
Instructors
for the freedom of the press session are Dr. Susan Ross, associate
professor, Edward R. Murrow School of Communication, Washington
State University; and Dr. Amy Reynolds, assistant professor,
School of Journalism, University of Indiana.
The
San Antonio Express-News is generously supplying
meeting space for the group and the Corpus Christi Caller-Times
is sponsoring lunch for the attendees.
The
first class in the 2004 FAI series, an examination of the
freedom of speech, was held in Dallas on March 5-6.
The group will meet in Houston on July 23-24 to study the
freedom of religion. The series concludes September
29-30 with a discussion of the freedoms of assembly and petition
in Austin. A graduation reception and dinner will follow
the final class session and graduates receive free admission
to the Bernard and Audre Rapoport 2004 Freedom of Information
Conference in Austin on October 1, 2004 at the InterContinental
Stephen F. Austin Hotel.
The
goal of the FAI is to provide a select group of individuals
with a year of in-depth, graduate-level study of the importance
and applications of our First Amendment, its relationship
to freedom of information and its implications for our democracy.
The
opportunity to participate in this year-long study of the
First Amendment is open to all. If you are interested
in applying for the 2005 class, or sponsoring a member of
your staff or organization, please contact the FOIFT office
at 214.977.6658, via e-mail at foift@airmail.net or visit
our Web site at www.foift.org.
The
FOIFT is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization supported through
